The Fur Trade
The fur trade profoundly influenced the lifestyle and culture of the
Northwest Territories over a period of some 150 years. It was the
abundance of fur-bearing mammals, and the quality of their pelts, which
originally attracted Europeans to explore the North. The trade relied on the
furbearers of the subarctic forest: beaver, muskrat, mink, marten and lynx.
