The Sahtu Dene have a deep understanding of the land, the water and
the animals. With this understanding comes a tremendous respect for the
food that nature provides. It is said the spirit of the caribou oversees
people who are preparing meat. The spirit watches to see they do things
properly that they dry his meat on clean poles, for example. Caribou
makes himself available for those who treat the meat with respect.
If one thing could be singled out that binds the people of Déline
most strongly to their land and heritage, it would be caribou.
Many traditional stories show the wisdom and character of the caribou.
The
caribou has
always been a staple of Dene subsistence, and its seasonal
migrations have determined people's movements on the land.
